Love Love Love

Mark Wild (KODA Denmark)

I love this song. It’s so upbeat and fun. It’s a perfect song to just let loose and dance around your kitchen making cookies on Tuesday night. Everybody wants to find love and that’s what this song basically says, “You need love, love, love.”

When you get up in the morning
There’s no one there to greet
And you just wanna go right back to sleep
When you get home in the evening
You turn on the TV
So you don’t feel alone, it’s plain to see
That you need love, love, love, love, love
You’re not hard to read
No, you need me, you need me
You need love, love, love, love, love
So don’t try to leave
‘Cause you need me

When you’re moving down the sidewalk
You hope that you will meet
The one true love who’s only in your dreams
When you’re looking out the window
You’re staring at the trees
You’re not at all at ease, it’s plain to see
That you need love, love, love, love, love

Without real emotions you’ll lose your mind
The stronger the passion, the better the time
Without love and devotion you’ll never be fine
Yes, I know (yeah)
That you need love, love, love, love, love.

This song is really laid back and very chill. It’s about someone finally getting to the point that they are just tired of all the games that are being played in the relationship they are in. It’s even to the point that the person has become something that they don’t want to be. So they finally say, “put a fork in me. I’m d-o-n-e.”

I don’t need I’m sorry
I don’t need no sad songs
I’m gonna be alright, alright
Cause you were so wrong
Thought I needed your touch
All I wanted was you
Now its time to put an end
To everything you put me through

I’m tired of spinning my wheels
Sick and tired of how I feel
I don’t like who iIve become
Don’t wanna wait for what might be
Baby stick a fork in me
I’m D-O-N-E
Done

Baby please stop talking
Don’t matter what you’re saying
It won’t change my mind
So Much I won’t be missing
You walking contradiction
Go waste someone else’s time
You’ve had enough of mine

Chorus

You can’t say I didn’t try to make this love last
Cause I wanted to, but now

Chorus

Dirt Cheap

Luke Bryan, Dallas Davidson (BMI), Hillary Lindsey (ASCAP)

My roommate and I went to see Luke Bryan at Tin Pan South in Nashville. He was playing with three other writers upstairs at the Hard Rock. We waited in line two hours. When Luke performed “Dirt Cheap” it just stopped me in my tracks. I knew I wanted to record it on my debut album. I just really connected with the song lyrically.

It’s like I’m on the bottom of your boots
Something you brush off when you’re through
It’s like you never even noticed I’ve been on you
Like I’m on the bottom of your boots

It’s like
I’ve been sittin’ on a discount shelf
Red tag mark down last one left
Like you’re savin’ all your money
For somethin’ else
Pickin’ me up off the discount shelf

You can keep all your pennies
Deep in your pocket don’t fall to me

‘Cause my love ain’t dirt cheap
I’m not a yard sale special
On a dead end street
I’ll never be a buy-one-get-one-free
And no my love ain’t dirt cheap

I used to be a diamond in your eyes
Like a precious stone
That’s hard to find
And on your darkest day
You said I’d shine
A precious diamond in your eyes

Now it’s like I’m at a pawn shop
Waiting for you to trade
Somethin’ for me

But my love ain’t dirt cheap

I’m not a yard sale special
On a dead end street
I’ll never be
A buy-one-get-one-free
No, my love ain’t dirt cheap

I can’t keep on thinkin’
One day you’ll believe
I’m worth somethin’ more
Than candy in a dime store
No, I can’t do that anymore

Let me tell ya
My love ain’t dirt cheap
I’m not a yard sale special
On a dead end street
I’ll never be
A buy-one-get-one-free
No, my love ain’t dirt cheap

Take it or Leave it Alone

Elisah Hoffman, Stephanie Chapman, Nathan Chapman, Rebecca Lynn Howard (BMI)

This song is about being put in the friend zone. You really like a guy. You think he likes you. Then he does something that completely crashes those thoughts. He might even lead you on a little bit. Finally, you just want him to decide whether he wants you or not. It’s a fun song to sing. I think every girl has been there. I know I have.

Those front porch end of the night-eyes
I’m watching you lean in
I’m thinking it’s goin’ down tonight
But you put your hand on my shoulder
And say I’m your best friend
And then seal the deal with a high five

Take it or leave it, leave it or take it, I don’t care
Say it and mean it, mean what you say or don’t even go there
You’re playin’ with a heart that don’t wanna play along
And that’s wrong
So leave it or take it, take it or leave it alone

We’ll talk for hours and hours about
How do I tell her
So I say just tell her how you feel
And I swore you were talkin’ ‘bout me
Guess I was Crazy
‘Cause you said great advice, that you it’s been real

Chorus

Do or die, now or never
But please don’t string me
Along forever

Chorus

Not So Far Away

Sarah Jane Madole, Josh Bronleewe (SESAC)

I chose this song because it is very upbeat, positive and hopeful. We had fun recording this song and got a little crazy-creative on the bridge. Gotta get up off that floor, gotta walk through that open door, maybe that’s the perfect place to start. The lyrics say that no matter how hard life gets, or how down you can get, it will get better. You gotta get up and put a smile on your face and work through it. It’s my country version of Kelly Clarkson’s “What Doesn’t Kill You” (Stronger).

Hmmmmmm Yeah
Another night turns to day
Another tear rolls down your face
You let it get away
You stand tall like it’s okay
But your heart knows you better
You let it run away
Miles and dreams go by
Still hope is by your side

Baby you’re not so far away from that place
Where you found the strength for a brand new day
Break free from those chains
That are holding you down
You’re gonna make it back around
Now you’re own your way home

You’re on your way home
Every step you take
Is another moment that you make
For a better day
Well storms are gonna come
Through through the rain you gotta run
It’s making you stronger

Baby you’re not so far away from that place
Where you found the strength for a brand new day
Break free from those chains
That are holding you down
You’re gonna make it back around
Now you’re own your way home

How does it feel
How does it feel to be alive
Can’t you see
Can’t you see
The beauty in this life

You made mistakes
You’re just a man
Everyone deserves a second chance
Gotta make the most of what you got

You gotta get up off that floor
Gotta walk through that open door
Baby that’s the perfect place to start
Baby you’re not so far away from that place
Where you found the strength for a brand new day
Break free from those chains
That are holding you down
You’re gonna make it back around
Now you’re own your way home

Another night turns to day
Another tear rolls down your face
Don’t let it get away

I Wanna Live Like That

Larry Wayne Clark, Cathy-Anne McClintock (SOCAN)

Tim McGraw had that great song, “Live Like You Were Dying” – this is one of those great songs. I absolutely love it. If we could all live life every day to the fullest we’d have no regrets. We need to feed our dreams and honor our wishes and goals. I’ve cut an album. What do you want to do? Oh, by the way, listen for the sleigh bells.

I wanna learn from my mistakes
I wanna give back what I take
I wanna be there for my friends
I wanna always make amends
I wanna live like that

I wanna laugh right out loud
I wanna make my mama proud
I wanna have the strength to cry
I wanna always wonder why
I wanna live like that

I wanna love that way
I don’t wanna be afraid
open up my heart
cherish every day
with every breath i take
I wanna live like that

I wanna be heard when i pray
I wanna slow dance in the rain
I wanna love and be loved back
lose my way without a map
I wanna live like that

I wanna walk where things grow wild
I wanna see my baby smile
I wanna grow old gracefully
gather shells beside the sea
I wanna live like that

Stay With Me

Leigh Loyd (SESAC)

I wrote this song when I was going through a break up. The lyrics of this song tell exactly what I was feeling and going through. But then I looked back and realized that at the time that particular relationship was not what I needed. I had a bigger dream.

He said hello
And I said goodbye
He was torn to pieces
And I didn’t even cry
And I see your name
On my phone
I instantly hit ignore
Cuz I am already gone

Oh my gosh
There he goes again
Calling me for the 100th time
Oh when will he you understand
He says

Stay with Me
Stay with Me
I promise to do better
Just you wait and see
But I walked away
I walked away
Saw a bigger dream for me
It wasn’t in this small town scene

Three weeks later
I met a knew a guy
Thought he was something special
Until he said goodbye
He said we need to chat
And we were done just like that
A pain I never felt before
Knocked at my door

And all I hear is
His name all the time
It haunts me in my sleep
And echoes in my mind
And He says

Stay with Me
Stay with Me
I promise to do better
Just you wait and see
But I walked away
I walked away
Saw a bigger dream for me
It wasn’t in this small town scene

And I can’t get through the memories
I’ll be alright
It’ll take time
They keep messing with mind
And they say

Stay with Me
Stay with Me
I promise to do better
Just you wait and see

Stay with Me
Stay with Me
I promise to do better
Just you wait and see
But I walked away
I walked away
Saw a bigger dream for me
It wasn’t in this small town scene
No No No No No No No No No
It wasn’t in this small town scene

Girls Like Me

Aimee Mayo, Marv Green (BMI), Christopher Lindsey, Hillary Lindsey (ASCAP)

I chose “Girl Likes Me” because it’s basically me in a song. I’m very close to my family. I have fond memories of my childhood. I’m very close to my grandparents. I was raised in Kentucky. And there’s the boy… the first kiss, the broken heart, all that fun stuff. (How many times does a first love work out anyway?) The lyric in the bridge is: I want to settle down, but I need to be free; I might be afraid to fall, but I’ve still got a dream. That’s me! I’m living my dream.

I gave away my first real kiss
In the rain on a Friday night
To the star of the football team
Underneath the stadium lights
I cried the day he told me he was movin’ on
And I swore I’d never love again
All summer long

I can still smell the blossoms of those sweet Magnolia trees
I can still hear the Bible stories that my grandma used to read
As years fly by, I’m still the same inside as I used to be
I guess there ain’t no changing girls like me

I rode with grandpa in his pickup truck
Standin’ in the front seat
Had my arm around his shoulder
I was his little diamond store queen
We listened to all those songs playin’ on the radio
Now I lay in bed and wonder
Where did all those days go

I can still smell the blossoms of those sweet Magnolia trees
I can still hear the Bible stories that my grandma used to read
As years fly by, I’m still the same inside as I used to be
I guess there ain’t no changing girls like me

I want to settle down but I need to be free
I might be afraid to fall
But I’ve still got a dream

I can still smell the blossoms of those sweet Magnolia trees
I can still hear the Bible stories that my grandma used to read
All the years fly by, I’m still the same inside as I used to be
I guess there ain’t no changing
I guess there ain’t no changing
I guess there ain’t no changing girls like me
Girls like me
Girls like me

One Without the Other

Rick Carnes, Janice Carnes, Chris Faulk (ASCAP)

This is a cleverly written, tango-tempo, radio- friendly tune that you’ll be singing along to after one listen. When I cut it I kept imagining dancing to it and got this idea of a Dirty Dancing remake for the video. I studied theatre and love to dance, but in the video I feign the talent just to keep the attention of this hunky guy. I can’t wait for the auditions!

Eggs and bacon kinda
Go together just like
Sandy beaches and sunny weather
Like popcorn and movies do
Yellow and navy blue
Elephants and the zoo
Baby like me and you

One without the other’s like a ship without a rudder
Playing golf without a putter
Eating biscuits without butter baby
You and I are fate
So hard to separate
I’m starting to discover
Can’t have one without the other

Every pilot has a traffic controller
Just like every highway’s gotta have a shoulder
It’s more than necessity
The way it has to be
Like love and destiny
Baby like me and you

One without the other’s like a ship without a rudder
Playing golf without a putter
Eating biscuits without butter baby
You and I are fate
So hard to separate
I’m starting to discover
Can’t have one without the other

You and I are fate
So hard to separate
I’m starting to discover
Can’t have one without the other

One without the other’s like a ship without a rudder
Playing golf without a putter
Eating biscuits without butter baby
You and I are fate
So hard to separate
I’m starting to discover
Can’t have one without the other
Can’t have one without the other

What An Answered Prayer Looks Like

Steven J. Williams (SESAC), Morgan Tobias (SOCAN)

This was co-written by hit songwriter Steven J. Williams who wrote “Red Neck Yacht Club” and “A Father’s Love.” He’s my producer’s (Preston Sullivan) best friend. One night, I was listening to the pitch CD that Preston had put together. I couldn’t sleep. I listened to “What An Answered Prayer Looks Like” over and over and over, and it suddenly just clicked. The song is about a woman waiting for the right one, praying and describing that person she wants in her life. I realized that I’m willing to wait for the right one to come along. I knew we had to record this. It’s an important part of Positively Leigh.

I folded my hands by the night stand
Hoping and praying to the man upstairs
Counting those sheep drifted off to sleep
Wondering if he really even cared

You’re the only reason the sun shines
You’re the only one that I call mine
You’re sure a sight for these sore eyes
You’re what an answered prayer looks like

You didn’t wear white didn’t have wings
Didn’t wear a halo or play the harp
But you sang me a song and you came along
When the world was empty and the night was dark

You’re the only reason the sun shines
You’re the only one that I call mine
You’re sure a sight for these sore eyes
You’re what an answered prayer looks like

I thought I’d see a turn in the road
Or a sign that would show how my life was about to change
Just like a cloud in the sky
I’d done so much crying

I’d suddenly ran out of rain

Chorus

Hard Living

Sarah Jane Madole, Josh Bronleewe (SESAC)

“Hard Living” is the story of a young man finding himself in a life-changing situation. He and his girlfriend have a baby girl. She leaves them. He knows he is not capable of caring for her, though he tries. He makes the very difficult decision to place the baby girl for adoption – a decision that haunts him his entire life. I understand that adoption is a decision of circumstance, not one of an unwanted child. I was adopted. I am grateful for all the things that have been provided for me by my parents and I have continued relationships with my birth parents. I consider adoption a wonderful choice.

He hit the plow six days a week
Cotton kept good company
He was young but he wore the work on his face
He found love and baby came
But love left like a hurricane
His heavy heart would never be the same
Another day another night
Another trial another fight

It was a hard living when the rent was due
But he made his vow and he followed through
Life wasn’t easy but he kept believing
Best time to grow is the rainy season

His baby girl he couldn’t give
A string of pearls or a life to live
He gave her away so she could grow
It was the hardest thing he ever did
Hoping one day she could forgive

It was a hard living when the rent was due
But he made his vow and he followed through
Life wasn’t easy but he kept believing
Best time to grow is the rainy season

Fifty years gone by
Man it seems like the blink of an eye
No fortune no fame
But it was a life he made

The time came for him to rest
Wash clean of his regrets
Looking in his daughter’s eyes
He said

It was a hard living when the rent was due
I know it hurt so much but it was best for you
It was all I could do

It was a hard living when the rent was due
But he made his vow and he followed through
Life wasn’t easy but he kept believing
Best time to grow is the rainy season
Yeah the best time to grow is the rainy season
Best time to grow is the rainy season
